The SSh-40 steel helmet was a standard combat helmet used by the Soviet Army during World War II. It was introduced in 1940 to replace the earlier SSh-36 helmet. The SSh-40 (short for Stalnoy Shlem 1940, meaning “steel helmet 1940”) became the iconic helmet associated with Soviet soldiers during the war.
The SSh-40 helmet was widely issued to Soviet soldiers throughout World War II and saw extensive use in major battles such as the Battle of Stalingrad and the Battle of Kursk. It remained in service with the Soviet Army even after the war and continued to be used by various countries in the Eastern Bloc.
